I strongly believe that Mathematics is the most rigorous and most efficient subject for training in logic and critical thinking. Students who think they may be interested in pursuing careers involving debate or research should find my approach helpful, as it involves emphasis on definitions and deductions over memorization of formulas or repeated calculations. Of course, you will still need to be able to perform calculations!

I specialized in Mathematical Logic in Graduate School; specifically, Computable Model Theory. Since elementary mathematical logic involves turning statements into formulas, I naturally find advising students to recall the meanings of the symbols they work with to be a good guide to further learning. In particular, Calculus students who have trouble dealing with epsilon delta definitions of limits may find I can provide clarity, since I am quite comfortable dealing with definitions of the form "For every there exists".
