Once, I tutored a year 9 student while I was in India. The student initially lacked basic math skills. The school teachers kept on teaching the student new subject everydays. No one cared about what the student learned.

For the student, I started with the basics. When solving a math problem, I made sure he understood what he is doing each step. He began to understand the basics.

I also gave him homework. This made him do math problems himself and finally become proactive. I believe in teaching the student in a way that one becomes proactive when it comes to math problems.

Finally, he was the only student among his circle of friends who was able to pass year 9.
