Linnea Balderrama

Subject specialties: English, essay writing, ESL, and more.

How long have you been teaching?
I’ve been teaching for over 13 years (12 of those as an elementary public school teacher of English Learners).

For you, what’s the best part about being a teacher?
The best part of teaching is seeing students excited and proud of reaching their learning goals! I love it when students gain confidence and feel empowered to guide our lessons through what they wish to learn. From my experience, I can add to those goals to make sure lessons are well-rounded.

How would you describe your teaching style?
Flexible, but individually focused – I enjoy tailoring lessons specifically to individual student needs or goals. I start and end each lesson with short discussions with students because the more I know them individually, the better I can tie the lessons to what works for their learning style and interests.

What do you like about teaching on Skooli?
It’s amazing to be able to work with students all around the world!

What’s the best way to prepare for a lesson with you?
Write down your goals or topics you wish to learn about – if you’re interested in it, you’ll retain more of the information.

Dr. Akhlaq Ahmad

Subject specialties: Physics, math, algebra, and more.

How long have you been teaching?
I have been in the teaching profession since 1999. Since 2018, I have also been working as an online tutor and trainer.

For you, what’s the best part about being a teacher?
The best part of being a teacher is that all your work is actually about giving back to the community. The joy of bringing people from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge is indescribable. No other profession can be so rewarding, spiritually.

How would you describe your teaching style?
I subscribe to a highly interactive style, supporting teaching materials with highly interactive software tools that allow the students to play around with the concepts and get a holistic view of the problem and its solution. I encourage my students to ask questions and actively participate in discussions regardless of their communication and confidence level. I check students’ involvement by randomly asking related questions.

What do you like about teaching on Skooli?
Skooli helps me improve my pedagogical skills by providing me the opportunity to interact with students from different cultural and educational backgrounds, all from the comfort of my home. Working with Skooli is also highly rewarding in financial terms. One can earn a competitive hourly rate and can request an instant payout.

What’s the best way to prepare for a lesson with you?
I recommend my students come prepared for the class. They should have the big picture in mind and should know what type of problems we will solve in the class. I use the tried and tested candy wrapper approach to make sure that not only my students know how to solve the problem at hand, but also realize where the whole thing fits in the entire scheme of things.

Melina Peebles

Subject specialties: Science, biology, math, and more.

How long have you been teaching?
I’ve been teaching for 19 years.

For you, what’s the best part about being a teacher?
The best part about being a classroom teacher is watching my students grow throughout the year and seeing their hard work pay off. The best part about being an online teacher is getting to be there when the student has the aha moment, and share in their excitement.

How would you describe your teaching style?
I ask students a lot of questions at first, trying to back up until we find the transition from solid understanding to confusion. Then I introduce one new concept at a time, breaking it down into smaller and smaller questions, and guiding students as they put it back together in a way that fits with what they already know. When students can explain it themselves, I know they are ready to move on. Every student moves at a different pace and I think positive reinforcement with specific feedback is the most helpful.

What do you like about teaching on Skooli?
I enjoy the variety of subjects and students, as well as the scheduling flexibility.

What’s the best way to prepare for a lesson with you?
Elementary students can just show up ready to learn. For middle school students, the best way to prepare would be to take a moment to think of a question about the concept that is giving them trouble. If they’re in high school or college, it’s really helpful to send me the material they’re working on a few days in advance.

Shikha Sharma Thakur

Subject specialties: Science, math, algebra, and more.

How long have you been teaching?
I have been teaching for a total of about 10 years and in the last 2 years, I have been teaching online.

For you, what’s the best part about being a teacher?
It may sound a bit too emotional, but I will express what I feel, nevertheless. For me being a teacher is quite similar to being a parent. As a parent, one passes on a part of oneself to the next generation, nurture the child physically, mentally, and culturally; and that’s an immensely satisfying experience. I feel all teachers do the same with their students. I have worked in multinational corporations in Asia and Europe and enjoyed that experience too, however, working in the corporate sector never gave me this deep and profound happiness that I get when my students do well in exams and make me feel proud about my contribution in making a good citizen of the future.

How would you describe your teaching style?
A teacher is not a repository or source of mere information. The relationship, comfort, and trust between the teacher and the student is paramount for me. Every student is smart and intelligent in their own way and hence, I always try to make sure that every student of mine realizes the fact that no problem is too big and that they can trust me. Thereafter, I try to explain the given topic to the best of my ability and walk the student through it holding their hand. In essence, I always ensure that it’s not a one-way flow of information but a collaborative process in which the student is as much an active and contributing partner as I am.

What do you like about teaching on Skooli?
As I mentioned earlier, teaching is more than employment for me. It gives me immense pleasure to be part of so many lives that are growing up and have a bright future ahead. Due to certain reasons, it is not possible for me to join a school full time, and Skooli gives me the freedom to be a teacher without having to step out of my home. The whole team of Skooli is a pleasure to work with, which adds a lot more to this wonderful experience.

What’s the best way to prepare for a lesson with you?
Rather than specifically for me, I would say the best way to prepare for any lesson on any kind of platform- be it regular school or online, is to go through the topic at least a couple of times, note down the difficulties and questions, and then focus in the class. At the end of class, the student can have a quick look at his/her pre-class short notes and ask any questions that are still unanswered or not sufficiently clear. I personally believe this is a good way to use the time and money efficiently and get maximum output.
