I am professionally a lecturer in the Science field (Structural Geology). When I explain concepts/ theories to students, I like to start with an easy idea or relate it to something that the student is familiar with from everyday life and then expand on it. I ask the students questions in the process to understand how they think and I use this understanding to explain the concept further. It then becomes a neat conversation about science rather than a monologue. I have been told that my best qualities are that I am approachable and very patient.
What gets me up in the morning? Coming up with innovative ways to teach what I know in my field. I am known for using playdoh, craft paper and food for demonstrations. Students learn better with demonstrations. I keep track of the latest research and discoveries by attending talks at my institute (University of Toronto) and attending conferences and meetings.
